School Profile Banner Elk School is situated in the heart of Banner Elk. The school was established over 60 years ago. Our beautiful stone building was built in 1939 as part of the WPA project. We are a Pre-K through fifth grade public school in the Avery County School System. There are approximately 200 students enrolled at our school. We are an A+ school embracing the integration of the arts into our curriculum. Banner Elk is the Professional Development School for Lees McRae College and part of the Appalachian State University Public School Partnership. Mission Statement Banner Elk School has a mission to guarantee a quality education program for all students in a challenging, secure environment. We, as professional, caring educators, will provide a relevant, integrated curriculum. We believe developing integrated instructional units including the Arts will maximize each childs learning potential. At Banner Elk we believe a safe, secure environment is essential to learning. We believe all students can become responsible citizens and life long learners. Our students will become critical thinkers who are responsible, knowledgeable and who can succeed as life-long learners in a richly diverse society.
