Welcome to Crossnore Elementary School !

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Crossnore, let me introduce you to our school. We are a rural school located in the mountains of western North Carolina near the Tennessee line. We are situated in the state’s Christmas tree capital near Grandfather Mountain and Avery County ’s picturesque ski slopes. Our school has approximately 250 pre-kindergarten through fifth grade students, and we are a school wide Title I school with approximately 50% of our students qualifying for free and reduced priced meals. All of our teachers meet the No Child Left Behind requirement of being highly qualified in the areas they teach. Faculty and staff members constantly seek out researched based professional development opportunities such as Response to Intervention, Foundations of Reading, Fundations, and Language!. Our team is dedicated to meeting both the academic and social needs of all children in our care. Part of our mission is to assure that our students leave Crossnore with a store of happy memories.

School has changed over the past five years. You will find the new emphasis on academics, including technology skills, extremely rewarding. Some of the projects we have underway include: a Joint Lees McRae College and Appalachian State University Storytelling Project, a Drama Club, visual and performing arts, and tutoring both during and after school. Technology from our Project IMPACT grant includes: Smart Boards, Elmo document cameras, digital cameras, and classroom sound systems in every classroom as well as a wealth of software. The world of our children is very different than it was when we were in school. It is vital that we teach all students how to locate and analyze information rather than simply restate facts.

We are charged with preparing our students to compete in a global society. Our goals are to help children establish a strong work ethic which will help them throughout life, to help them learn basic manners while treating others with respect, and to support each other. You will hear us emphasize daily: Work Hard! Be Nice! And, Take Care of Each Other!

Supporting one another applies to students, faculty and staff, and parents. We would love to have you visit and volunteer. We always have students who need someone to read to them or for someone to listen to them read! Maybe you can help us write grants! You may share your travel experiences. Last year we had a guest speaker who grew up in China . Many of you have life experiences which match topics our students are studying. If you are more comfortable helping paint, clean, copy and staple, cut cards, build cabinets, etc., we can also use your expertise in these areas. Our PTO is actively seeking volunteers. If you have a skill or talent you would like to share, please call the school office at (828)737-7204 and leave your name and phone number. We will have our volunteer coordinator get back in touch with you as quickly as possible.

I am beginning my third year at Crossnore and have fallen in love with the school and its community. I began my career in the old Crossnore building as a substitute teacher and then as an assistant. I feel like I have returned home after working in in a variety of positions in both Wake and Watauga counties.

We invite you to visit and look forward to seeing you! My door is always open. Please feel free to stop by or call anytime.

Sincerely,

Mission Statement

We, the faculty, believe in the development of each child intellectually, physically, creatively, socially, emotionally, aesthetically, and morally. We believe that every child should be able to work on a level commensurate with his ability. Each child is accepted and respected as an individual.

We strive for an environment that fosters self-discipline, independent learning, and social interaction. It is our desire that each child develops his unique abilities, interests, and creativity. In accomplishing these goals, we believe we should work toward meeting each child’s individual needs. We realize the benefits of providing an atmosphere where every child feels respected and loved while developing values necessary for a productive, responsible and enjoyable life.

To achieve these objectives the family, school, and community should work together. Only through a unified effort can we prepare our students to live in a democratic society.
