FOOTBALL
General info: Avery Middle takes pride in it's football program. The goal for this level is to ensure success as a feeder school to Avery High School. Academics are our first priority, players must complete their academic requirements before competing on the football field. Athletes are also required to follow all school guidelines and behavior issues at school are also dealt with at practices. Discipline issues are not tolerated! Parents are encouraged to help the players with their academic goals.
Players: Enjoy your break, practice will start on July 15, 2008 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:45 to 7:30. If you ordered cleats, they have came in along with a great deal of our practice equipment. Gloves and shorts have not arrived yet and I expect them the week after the 4th. Remember these practices are not required (these only help you), football practices begin on August 1, 2008. Helmets only on August 1st.
Season: The football team has spring and summer workouts that begin at the end of April. The first mandatory day of practice is August 1, 2008. The season generally ends around the middle to the end of October.
Description of program? (co-ed?) We encourage anyone that is willing to play and dedicate their time and efforts to come out for the football team. Our football teams are not limited to one gender. The 7th and 8th graders compile the football team at Avery Middle and are encouraged to come out each season. At Avery Middle we hold our players to a high standard and have guidelines on what it means to be the Avery Middle. . .

GIRLS' BASKETBALL
| The Lady Panthers had a very successful 2007 basketball season. They won the regular season championship by posting a 10-0 record. The Lady Panthers placed 2nd in the post season tournament and finished out the season with an 11-1 record. |
We are very dedicated to our basketball programs at Avery Middle. We do our best to get our girls ready for competition on this level and the next. Basketball season begins in mid to late October. The season ends in the middle of December, and most of the girls play on YBOA teams after the Middle Schools season is over. There is an open tryout for all 7th and 8th grade girls. Tryouts last 2 to 3 days and a final decision for the team is made. Like many sports at Avery Middle, academics take priority. All athletes must be willing to sacrifice much of their time to academics, athletic events, and practices.
The Lady Panthers will return 7 of the 13 players from the 2007 roster, and are looking to maintain their place among the best.
Toe River Conference: Cranberry Wildcats, Harris Blue Devils, Bowman Bulldogs, Cane River Rebels, and East Yancey Panthers.
Games begin at 5:00 and the boys play afterwards.
